The City of Reno was from the 459th Bomb Squad which was part of the 330th Bomb Group. The 330th Bomb Group consisted of the 457th, 458th, 459th Bomb Squadron. After training at Walker Air Force base in Kanas, the 330th's Ground Echelon arrived at Guam on February 18, 1945. The first 330th B29 Superfortresses set down at North Field, Guam on March 25, 1945. The 330th first flew against Japan on April 12, 1945. Its forty-seventh and final bombing strike was in the air at the hour the Japanese capitulation was announced on August 15, 1945. The 330th had the lowest overall abort rate on the ground, and the highest over-the-target rate of any Bomb Group in the entire 20th Air Force. If you can't read this writing very well, it's because the air if kind of bumpy. We're on our way back from a mission now. Had a hot party up Tokyo-way yesterday. It was torrid in the air as well as on the ground, and the Nips throwing up are frantic, though rather ineffective defense. Sometimes I get the idea that they don't like us to fly over their sacred soil. By the way, did you ever meet General Power in Colo. Springs. I haven't met him personally, but from what I've seen of him at Wing meetings, he seems to be a might fine fellow. Larry, one of our young gunners, is sitting in my seat, getting checked out in my position. He's concentrating on all the instruments and asks a question occasionally. He's pretty smart. I'm going to teach him cruise control one of these days. I'm glad to hear you intend to make your home in California. I am too. I sure am looking forward to the day I see your smiling face again, you lovely kid, and oh baby, what thoughts and anticipation. Write soon, honey, and lots of luck in your new job. Love, Ervin.' Lt.
