Lot 2. Muhammad Ali (Born 1942). American heavyweight world champion, known outside the ring for poetry and outspoken political views. Born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr., Ali changed his name after joining the Nation of Islam in 1964, subsequently converting to Sunni Islam in 1975 and later Sufism. In 1967 Ali refused to fight in the Vietnam war due to his religious beliefs. He was subsequently stripped of his championship title and his boxing license was suspended. He did not fight again for nearly four years. His alignment with the Nation of Islam turned him into one of the era's most recognizable and controversial figures. He retired from the ring in 1979.
