Bong (1920-1945). America's "Ace of Aces." Flying the P-38 Lightning in the Pacific theater Major Richard Bong was the top scoring U. S. Ace during WWII with 40 kills. After he got married he returned to California where he became a test pilot for the Army Air Force jets. From July 7th to August 6th, 1945 he made 11 test flights. On August 6, 1945 (the day the Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima) Dick Bong was killed when the P-80 he was testing stalled on takeoff and he bailed out at low altitude.
5.5x3.5 48-star American flag, signed in black ink. A very rare signature.
